In a culture so obsessed with sex and being normal, it seems that instead of liberating us and giving us more sexual freedom, the sexual revolution has given us more things to worry and obsess about. We live in a society where everything has a label: normal, over-sexed, frigid, sex addict. It’s not surprising that so many people worry whether they are meeting the expected sexual standards of the day. Many individuals worry that they are not “normal” or at least being considered as being the same as everyone else. It seems that in the current day and age, we still worry about being, feeling or doing different things to the common crowd. Many of us one worried if our sex drive is too high or too low.
Sex drive refers to a person’s desire to engage in sexual activity. In our current society, a high sex drive is a gold standard and the normality that most seek to achieve. In actual fact, all matters sexual are relative, there is no “normal” There are many factors that play a part in every individual’s sexual activity; normal is how however often you are comfortable with it.
It is not surprising that many people think that there must be something wrong with them if they are not thinking of sex every minute of the day. Or worrying if there is a problem when their partners don’t seem to have sex constantly on their minds.
What Is A Normal Sex Drive?
There is no such thing as a normal sex drive, or libido, in fact, sex health professionals recommend that we should consider sex drive as a spectrum and that the only time we need to be worried is if we find ourselves at the very ends of the spectrum. One end of the spectrum is the complete absence of any sexual desire and the other end is sexual addiction. Wherever each individual finds themself on the spectrum will be due to a vast number of factors that affect the sexual drive in the person’s daily life.
Some people may find themselves naturally on the lower end of the spectrum and do not find themselves often thinking about sex or even feeling the need for sexual activity. In the same way, other individuals have a higher sex drive and find that they need to have a sexual activity every day. The important thing is to not worry about what is considered normal for everyone else but what you would consider normal for yourself.
Fluctuations in Sexual Drive
Sex drive can also fluctuate, as it is affected by factors around us, our health, both mental and physical, tiredness, age, medication hormones, or chronic Infections. and what may be normal for one person may not be normal for another. There are occasions when a person’s sex drive becomes extremely high or low, enough to cause concern, in this situation it is important to see a doctor.
Male Sex Drive vs Female Sex Drive
It is a commonly held belief that men have a higher sex drive than women, this is not strictly true, although we know that desire in males and females is affected by testosterone and men produce 10x and 20x more testosterone compared to females. Hormones can be a contributing factor to sex drive but there is a multitude of other factors that all play a part.
In a relationship it is important that you and your partner are in agreement regarding your sexual activity frequency, if one partner has a higher sex drive compared to the other then you need to talk about what would be acceptable to you both in terms of frequency.
